IE6 - When will it end and what's being done

This results in a waste of countless hours by web site designers tweaking websites so that they will display properly in IE6. This cost of these extra hours is often passed to the designers customer either directly or indirectly. First, Web Designers may increase their prices to account for the extra man hours required to support Internet Explorer 6. Second, even if web designers don't increase their prices, the time spent making IE6 compatible could have been spend and enhancing other aspects of the customers website. Finally, some designers simply refuse to support IE6 causing their clients to miss out on potential customers, unknowingly using this out of date browser.

So What is being done?

Many major companies and websites are simply refusing to support Internet Explorer 6 anymore. The idea is that as IE6 users become unable to use some of their favorite pages such as Facebook, Google, etc. that they will be forced to update their browsers.

A major coup in the fight against Internet Explorer 6 occured in March of 2010 when Google official dropped support for the browser for most of its web applications prompting many in the tech industry to declare IE6 officially dead. In fact a mock funeral in with even Microsoft participated was held in Internet Explorer 6's honor. However, many in the industry consider this declaration premature as Microsoft has stated that it will continue to support IE6 until 2014. Until than, designers and businesses alike will continue to suffer.
